The National Trust Knole was built in the 15th century by Archbishop Bouchiere and was subsequently enlarged as a royal palace under Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The country seat of the Sackvilles since the 17th century, it has belonged to the National Trust since 1946.
In addition to the impressive suite of rooms open to the public, Knole is occupied by ten separate households. The practice has led a major programme of conservation and repair at the house as well a project to reorder the family areas.
