An aptitude for art combined with an interest in how things work and fit together led Richard to choose a career in architecture. He gets great satisfaction from a well-managed project and always enjoys working on site with a team to resolve problems as they appear, exploring the best way to deliver what his clients need.

Richard has a good rapport with clients and the repeat work to prove it. In particular, he values a close relationship with the National Trust, looking after many of its buildings in the South East. His approach to conservation embraces the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings’ principles of honesty of repair. He believes that new work should not be hidden: it should be clearly seen as new rather than adopting the pretence of being old.

The majority of Richard’s work has been conservation based, and he is proud of the fact that the practice has such a vast knowledge of the subject. At the same time, he welcomes the practice’s move towards designing newbuild developments and is enthusiastically tackling modern flat and office developments of his own.

‘What I love most about this job is that, however experienced you may be, you are constantly learning new things, both in the office and on site’.
