Ian has always been fascinated by how buildings are put together. He began his training as an architect, but his technical aptitude led him to focus on the practical aspects of design. He is particularly interested in the science of building materials and enjoys extending his knowledge of their capabilities and applications.
Ian’s hands-on approach is coupled with an interest in the procurement process. He uses his understanding of the legalities and complexities of the building contract mechanism and his rapport with contractors to best advantage.
Ian has extensive experience of working in the educational sector, and he is adept at maximizing opportunities to make the most of tight budgets. As a specialist in educational buildings, Ian’s portfolio includes many newbuild projects, but he has also worked on a wide range of historic buildings, which continue to fascinate him. His interest in fire engineering and his understanding of fire regulations enable him to determine which areas need protection. This expertise is particularly useful when converting listed buildings in a non-intrusive way. He has produced numerous fire strategy studies, including one for listed buildings at Westminster Abbey. He was also responsible for fire precautions projects at London’s Natural History Museum.
Ian enjoys working collaboratively, maintaining strong working relationships with contractors and clients alike. He also gets great satisfaction from leading enthusiastic teams to deliver projects on time and on budget.
‘As a practice, we can genuinely offer a great diversity of expertise, calling upon particular skills regardless of geographic location’.
