The common thread through Jane’s career has been the opportunity to run conservation projects involving the adaptive reuse of historic buildings. However, her wide experience before joining the practice in 2005 also encompassed retail projects as well as historic buildings, ranging from mills to town halls.
Jane enjoys the technical side of architecture as well as the ‘people’ aspect of the job. She sees liaising on site with clients and contractors as one of the most important elements of her role. She endeavours to ensure that projects run smoothly by keeping information flowing to contractors and renegotiating when unforeseen problems occur. Jane believes in the importance of confronting these problems without delay and encouraging everyone on the team to pull together to resolve them.
Publicly-funded projects have become her speciality and she has built close working relationships with local authorities and developers. Jane has made extensive contacts with conservation officers and other statutory bodies throughout the East Midlands. She is also involved in the development conservation techniques at national level as a member of the Technical Panel of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation.
Jane particularly relishes the challenge of taking on new build projects that are sensitive to their historic surroundings.
‘When working within historic settings, dealing with the inherent constraints can be the most rewarding aspect of the job.’
