TV's 'Time Team' join Purcell Miller Tritton on Dover Castle Project

15/12/2008:

Leading architects and historic building consultants Purcell Miller Tritton have been appointed as Project Managers on an exciting new scheme to create an infotainment experience for English Heritage at Dover Castle.

Channel Four TV’s Time Team are chronicling the work on the development of the Great Tower at Dover Castle, which also involves set designers from the Royal Shakespeare company and the creation of 3D holographic “ghost” images. The Castle is owned by English Heritage, who have earmarked over £2m for the ambitious project.

Andy Clark, Senior Principal at Purcell Miller Tritton, who is responsible for the project said, “This is an unusual role for us. Dover Castle has great historical significance, being built by Henry the Second during the 1180’s, and it is our task to re-create that era in the Great Tower and bring the whole building to life for visitors. It will be like stepping back into the 12th century, complete with lighting and sound effects”

The work includes ensuring that the Fabric of Dover Castle is maintained and that the work in creating lighting effects and room artefacts complements the heritage of the building. The project is currently at the research and planning stage with work expected to start early next Year.

He went on to add, “This Castle is one of the greatest examples of medieval architecture still in existence and we must ensure that the core integrity and charm of the Great Tower is preserved whilst making its important role to Henry II and his military infrastructure accessible to the thousands of visitors that are expected once it is finished.” The project is due for completion at the end of July 2009.
