We’re delighted that our commitment to sustainability has been recognised with a place on the Sunday Times’ prestigious Green List for 2010. The list ranks the 60 best green companies in the UK by measuring their efforts to cut their carbon footprint. It also surveys employees' views on how green their company is. Since the list was launched in 2008, competition for places has become fierce.
As green issues climb up the business agenda, clients are demanding that organisations substantiate their green claims. Our environmental report is published on our website and has been independently verified. Since we started formal management of sustainable issues in 2007, we have reduced both our direct and indirect carbon footprint. We’re proud to be recognised by the Sunday Times as one of the country’s top green companies, and we are determined to keep improving.
It’s a commonly quoted statistic that 50% of carbon emissions come from construction and the operation of our built environment. As architects, we are uniquely placed to make a big difference. As a practice, we work on many of the UK’s landmark historic buildings, and we are committed to conserving the country’s historic building stock. We’re also committed to minimising carbon in our new buildings.
These commitments are upheld through our in-house assessment system: the Purcell Miller Tritton Index of Sustainability (PIOS). Using PIOS, we review the sustainability of every project. With all teams striving to improve the environmental performance of their projects, we are seeing real results practice wide.
Already this year, our work at the Athenaeum Hotel in London has been recognised with two Sustain Awards for Business & the Built Environment 2010. Other pioneering projects include Cromer Hospital in Norfolk, which is anticipated to receive a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ environmental standard, and Coworth Park Spa in Surrey, which will deliver CO2 emissions 33% below the Target Emission Rate.
