Purcell Miller Tritton win prestigious Architectural Awards

10/12/2008:

Leading Architect and Historic Building Consultant Purcell Miller Tritton has won two categories at The Georgian Group Architectural Awards, sponsored by Savills. The practice received the accolades in recognition of their exemplary conservation work during 2008 and won particular praise for their “vision and expertise”.

This year’s awards were presented by the Archbishop of York, The Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr. John Sentamu, on 5th November at Christie’s. Martin Stancliffe, a Senior Principal at Purcell Miller Tritton, received his prize in the ‘Restoration of a Georgian Church’ category for his work at St. Paul’s Cathedral, London. The project gained the highest plaudit, the “summa cum laude”, of the 2008 competition.

Martin, who has been with Purcell Miller Tritton since 2004, has been the Surveyor to the Fabric of St. Paul’s Cathedral since 1990 and won the award for his work on the Cathedral’s recently finished £40m refurbishment project which took 15 years to complete.

A further award for ‘Restoration of a Georgian Landscape’ went to Richard Putnam, a Principal at Purcell Miller Tritton’s Canterbury office, for his work on Cobham Park in Kent. Described as “one of the conservation achievements of recent years”, the project received particular mention for its “jewel in the crown”, the £2.5m rescue of Darnley Mausoleum. The extensively vandalised Mausoleum sustained its worst damage in a fire on 5th November 1980, and 28 years later it is being seen as an exemplar for restoration projects of this type.

Mark Goldspink, CEO of Purcell Miller Tritton, commenting on the awards said, “We are delighted that both Martin and Richard received an accolade of this type from the highly prestigious Georgian Society. This is a true recognition of our significant contribution to the preservation of an important period of our national architectural heritage.”
