Leading architect and historic building consultant Purcell Miller Tritton has just completed its work as Architect and Conservation Consultant on the unusual £3.5m Old Dock Interpretation Centre project in Liverpool, following their appointment by Grosvenor.
The Old Dock was the first commercial enclosed wet dock to be built in the world and could harbour up to 100 ships in one day, but it disappeared under newer buildings almost 200 years ago. Now situated below Grosvenor’s Liverpool One shopping centre, the Old Dock has attracted huge attention from archaeologists, with Channel Four TV’s ‘Time Team’ taking the unique opportunity to film a special episode as the remains of this revolutionary structure were uncovered.
Purcell Miller Tritton provided advice on the conservation of a section of the original dock wall, which was built in 1711, during initial excavations as well as making recommendations for the repair and reinterpretation of the historic monument. The practice also designed an original interpretation centre which brings new life to the heart of Liverpool’s World Heritage site.
Upon entering the Interpretation Centre, visitors will be able to read about the history, background and construction of the Old Dock as well as view timelines depicting its life and evolution. An LCD screen is also expected to show a documentary about the excavation featuring content from Time Team’s special episode. Guests will then be able to descend into a ‘vault’ to view the original wall itself, where it is intended that a projector will play a video bringing the sights and sounds of the dock to life.
Jamie Coath, Project Architect and Senior Principal of Purcell Miller Tritton, said, “This is the most unusual project with which we have been involved in Liverpool and it is great news for the city. The Old Dock is of significant historical importance and I am delighted that we have played a part in ensuring that this archaeological gem remains on show for generations to come”.
